TEAM MUFASA ALPE DUZES : The day before the big day

Today is the big day of the Alpe DuHuZes. A day earlier Joost Meppelink of Team Mufasa wrote this blog. In preparation for the 6x climb they have been in the area for several days. Soon a blog about how the big day has been.

Tomorrow is the day. The day we will climb the Alpe d'Huez six times in the fight against cancer (and to celebrate life). We are looking forward to it but also dreading it.

We have been in Le Bourg d'Oisans for four days now for our final training at altitude. And because it is beautiful cycling here, we are taking it easy. According to my training app, I am doing too much and should only cycle quiet, flat laps. Well that didn't work out!
The first day we cycled a relatively small tour. 80 kilometers and over 2000 altimeters. It was hot so lots of food and drink. Preferably one and a half liters of drink per hour. Or eight large water bottles. Because it wasn't possible to refuel everywhere, I got into trouble on the last climb. Fortunately, I still had from Amacx Energy Fruit Chew that give quick sugar.
The next day we cycled the Marmotte. What a heroicy ride! In the valley it was warm and at the summit there was meters of snow. With the experience of the day before, I ate and drank as much as I could. Unfortunately, that was too much which gave me stomach cramps. At the foot of the last climb, the Alpe d'Huez, I refueled a lot of water. This calmed my stomach and I was able to clear the trek. Result: almost 200 kilometers and 5200 altimeters!
Fitness is fine. The past two days have been easy cycling, lots of uphill bits and carbohydrate stacking. Off to bed early tonight and up early tomorrow to have a blast.
