Joey van 't Verlaat (NLD)

I'm Joey van 't Verlaat, 19 years old, from Spijkenisse. Around the age of 12 I became a member of TVS'90, the local triathlon club. I was already a member of the cycling club at the time and once in a while I took part in a running race, but triathlon sport was not yet such a form for me. Only when I started to get podium places at Dutch championships and won the Dutch title at the duathlon in 2014 did I start training more specifically.

In 2016 I became a member of the local swimming club and I started training more about walking and cycling. Partly because of this, I made so much progress that I was allowed to make my debut in April of that year at the European Championships Duathlon in Kalkar, Germany. After a 16th place at that European Championship I was allowed to start at the ETU Junior Cup in Holten in early July 'to learn a lot'.

In 2017 I was in Quarteira, Portugal, for the first time at the start of an ETU Junior Cup abroad. Here I was able to connect with a large group for the first time after swimming. Later that year I performed even better in Holten. In September 2017 I won the Dutch title on the crosstriathlon with the juniors for the first time. I was also named sportsman of the year in December in the municipality of Nissewaard.

Last season was the best season I have ever played so far. Because I ended up as 2 nd Dutchman in both Haarlemmermeer and the ETU Junior Cup in Kitzbühel, a wildcard was requested (and eventually assigned) for the European Championship triathlon in Estonia. I was also selected for the WC duathlon for juniors in Odense, Denmark. This match I managed to finish a place on 3 rd by stting the entire race in the leading group! Two weeks later, unfortunately it clear again that the swimming still plenty to win: I came 60 th in the Estonian water, but managed by a strong bike and walking part still to advance to a 35 th place on the EC. After a well-deserved vacation, I came upon the NK OD (my first Olympic distance) to a 11th place overall and 8th place in the u23.
A good month later I won the Dutch title in Spijkenisse, just like in 2014 for youth. The Duathlon Championships in Ibiza two weeks later took a 4th place unfortunately something less than hoped out again, you are after all the number three in the world.

In 2019 I will go from the juniors to the seniors / u23, so next season will probably be dominated by training and learning between the 'big men'. I also hope to be re-fixed value for my league team Rogelli-Trimates, which this year finished 2nd in the top league in the Netherlands!
